H-D Locking Leather-Covered Hard Bags

WHY? Carrying stuff. I like the clean looks of the bike with no bags, but it seems like I am constantly toting something with me and need a place to carry it.  I'm not going to use the "fringe-and-conchos" look on this bike, so I decided to look for a set of bags with a plain leather finish.  I have had some luck with Leatherlyke bags in the past, but opted instead for a set of leather-covered hard bags from Harley-Davidson; besides liking the looks of these bags, I also like the fact that they are lockable.  The MSRP for this item (part #53061-00A) is a breath-taking $749 and I had decided to pass on it until I located it at my favorite H-D parts supplier, Zanotti Motors.  Their price was $597, still expensive but a nice 20% discount.

SERVICE.  Excellent.  After ordering I received a confirmation email from Zanotti's parts department; the next day I received a notification that they did not have the bags in stock but would notify me when they arrived.  I feared that I would face a long wait, but I received an email five days later notifying me that they had shipped.  They arrived at my door via UPS ground four days later.  I've done a great deal of shopping online, and I believe that Zanotti's service is about as good as I've seen; other vendors would do well to take note.  The bags arrived well-packed and undamaged; installation instructions were included.

INSTALLATION. This is a very simple installation and could be managed by just about any owner with a simple set of tools.  Though the instructions were included they weren't really necessary; the biggest issue was locating the correct hardware.  These bags will fit on most different Softail models so you'll need to pick out the mounting bolts that work on your particular bike.  The entire job took less than 15 minutes.

RESULTS.  Pretty good.  These particular bags represented a compromise for me; I didn't want the looks of a large set of bags, but with smaller bags such as these I'll sacrifice some carrying capacity.  They won't carry a great deal of gear, but they are fine for hauling a set of tools and some incidental items.  I am really impressed with the quality of these bags--they are well-constructed, sturdy, the locks operate smoothly, and the leather is rich-looking.  Appearance is always subjective, but I think that they look really nice on the Softail Heritage.

Worth the money?   Not for everyone.  They are well-made and attractive, but expensive.
