Corbin Smuggler Trunk

WHY? Storage--you can't get enough of it on a motorcycle!  As I was browsing the Corbin website I happened upon an interesting item called the Smuggler Trunk; designed to fasten atop the rear fender in place of the passenger pillion, it provides a locking storage space for incidental items.  Since I always ride solo and don't need the passenger pillion it looked like an interesting gadget.  My interest cooled quickly, however, when I saw the price--$499 is awfully expensive for an item that small.  While scoping out eBay one evening I saw an auction for one in black--a perfect match for my rear fender.  I placed a low "what-the-heck" bid and was surprised a couple of days later when I was notified that I had won the item!

SERVICE.  N/A.  Like all other eBay auctions, you're taking a chance.  The Smuggler arrived at my door with a couple of small dings in the paint but in otherwise excellent condition.

INSTALLATION. Couldn't be much easier; there were no instructions included with the trunk, but the procedure was pretty simple.  There is a hook at the front of the trunk that hooks under the seat and hole at the rear of the trunk that aligns with the passenger pillion mounting hole in the fender.  The only difficulty that I encountered was finding a 1/4X20  screw to anchor the rear of the trunk.  A quick search of my misc. parts bin turned one up, and I had the trunk in place in less than 5 minutes.

RESULTS.  A mixed bag.  There's not a great deal of room in the trunk, but I like the fact that it is lockable and easy to reach.  The quality of the unit is first-rate, and the lid closes and locks securely; the edges are sealed well so that the unit should be pretty well water-tight.  It is easily removed in seconds in case you need to use the passenger pillion.  Its appearance will be a matter of personal taste; some observers like its looks and others don't.  It integrates well into the lines of the rear fender, though, and it's kind of growing on me.

Worth the money?   Not unless you can buy it way below the suggested retail.
