GenMar Handlebar Risers

WHY?  Ergonomics.  I generally prefer a more upright riding position.  Although I had experienced no discomfort when riding the V-Strom, I couldn't help but feel that a little rise in the handlebars would be a good thing.  I had the option of going to a different set of handlebars, but I didn't want anything too severe and I was familiar with the GenMar risers and knew that they would raise the bars approximately one inch.  I logged on to the GenMar site and found what I was looking for--a riser that fits most bikes with 7/8" handlebars.  I ordered directly from their site, using a credit card via their secure server.  The price was $75.95 plus shipping for the risers in aluminum finish.

SERVICE. Excellent.  The risers arrived in just four days via USPS priority mail.  They were packed well and arrived undamaged, but I was a bit disappointed in their appearance.  They were not polished well, and there were some rough spots on the edges that I had to polish out.  They came with all parts and installation instructions.

INSTALLATION. Not difficult at all, and could be accomplished by the average home mechanic.  As always, when working with handlebars, BE SURE TO COVER THE TANK WITH A TOWEL OR BLANKET.  The bars can fall unexpectedly and leave a nasty dent in your fuel tank.  Fitting the risers in place only took about 5 minutes, but I took some extra time to check the cables and wiring to see that they were not stretched too tight.  Installation instructions were not necessary for me, but might be of some help to a novice wrench.  Total installation was about 10 minutes.

RESULTS. Not so great.  My initial reaction was that I didn't like the appearance of the risers, but I decided to go for a ride and see how they felt.  After 15 or 20 minutes on the road I decided that I actually preferred the stock handlebar position.  Riding ergonomics are a highly personal function, and your experience may differ, but these risers did nothing for me.

Worth the money? Nope.  eBay, here I come!
